Interview with a Chiropractor

What conditions can Chiropractic be used to treat?

Chiropractic can be used to treat a wide range of conditions relating to the bones, joints, nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments including some forms of headaches, backpain, mechanical neck pain, migraine prevention, sciatica, shoulder complaints, joint pains, muscle spasms, cramp, joint pain from arthritis, tension and inability to relax, generalised aches and pains, sports injuries, along with many other conditions. To find out if we might be able to help you just get in touch, or book a “free reduce my pain session”.

Do Chiropractors just treat the spine?

We are probably best known for treating necks and backs, but we are trained to treat most areas of the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles tendons, ligaments, bones and joints), we can work on shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, jaw etc. We like to take a whole body approach at Watkins Chiropractic and just because you come in with a pain in one area of the body don’t be surprised if we don’t just concentrate on that area, the problem isn’t always where the pain is, a restriction in one area of the body that might not necessarily be causing discomfort can cause another to become over used, damaged or painful.

Is Chiropractic suitable for me?

Chiropractic is suitable for most people, from just a few days old through to those in their 90’s, it can be used during pregnancy and can even be used to treat with many pre-existing health conditions that you might think would exclude you from treatment. This is because we aren’t just trained in one technique or method and so we can tailor treatment to your needs and lifestyle. If we need to refer you for imaging such as x-ray or MRI to confirm a diagnosis we can arrange that for you locally. Don’t worry if Chiropractic isn’t right for you we can refer you to someone more suitable, or if your GP is the best route we can keep them informed of our findings.

If you aren’t sure then our “free reduce my pain sessions” are perfect to answer any questions.

How does Chiropractic work?

Chiropractors take a full case history and perform a physical examination to determine areas of disfunction in your body, primarily looking for restriction, hypermobility, weakness or overuse. We then use a range of techniques to improve the function and reduce pain; releasing restrictions and supporting or reducing stress to hypermobile areas. This could be through manipulation of the soft tissues or joints, medical acupuncture, taping and many other techniques. After this the goal is to find out why this dysfunction happened and how to prevent it reoccurring by prescribing exercises, suggesting modifications to daily activities, nutritional advice.

Does treatment hurt?

Joint manipulation doesn’t hurt, the movements are very small, however if there is area is already sore or inflamed then as with any physical therapy it can cause either a little soreness at the time of treatment or in the next day or 2, like what you might experience after doing some exercise for the first time in a while. We always aim to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible.

What is involved in the first session?

On your first visit there will be some paperwork to fill so we ask that you arrive a few minutes early to get this done so we can make the best use of the appointment time. Then we will run through your medical history, ask questions so that we can get a clear picture of your lifestyle, and of course get a clear understanding of the symptoms you have come to get help for.

What should I wear to my appointments?

Something that you are comfortable to wear whilst receiving manual treatment or a physical examination, clothes similar to those that you might wear to exercise in are best, but many clients come in work clothing. Just remember you may need to remove some clothing for some soft tissue techniques such as sports massage or medical acupuncture. thorough physical exam, looking at the way your body moves in general and individual joints, perform the appropriate orthopaedic or neurological tests. Finally, we will give our professional opinion of what the problem is, if/how we might help and explain a treatment plan to get you out of pain and back to living your life.

I can’t come in during normal office hours?

Don’t worry we have shifts that start as early as 8am and some that run as late as 8pm and we are also open on Saturday mornings. We realise many clients need flexible hours, we do our best to offer them.

Ok it sounds great; how do I get started?

You can either book in for one of “free reduce my pain sessions” sessions just click on the button at the bottom of the page. I’ve tried other therapy’s/therapist in the past and they didn’t work for me should I try Watkins Chiropractic?
