What’s with all the popping, clicking and cracking?

Are all clicks the same? Why do my joints make those noises?

As you might have guessed there are several reasons why your joints might make noises that either you or those around you can hear. Ever wondered what’s going on when circle your neck or shoulders and perhaps other joints and sounds like there’s lots of noise, perhaps like a bag of marbles or other pops and cracks and graunching noises?

Well if you can make those noises over and over again within seconds of the last time then the likely hood is it’s all the tendons (bits that connect your muscles to your bones), muscles and other soft tissues flicking across each other and your bones and other structures. These noises tend to happen more often and louder the more tension there is in the area, so although this isn’t a serious issue it could be that a sign that things could be better, so it can be a good time to get things checked out by a Chiropractor.

But the noises associated with treatments such as Chiropractic adjustments, similar to when people crack their knuckles are different. They aren’t made by the bones themselves, and once you’ve “cracked” a certain joint you won’t be able to repeat that for another 20mins at least…why is this?

Well the noise is actually caused by gas within the joint capsule. It doesn’t mean that the adjustment is any better or worse if the pop is loud or small or if there is no sound at all, it’s just a byproduct of the movement and each of us is different in this way as with any other. We do know that the faster the adjustment the more likely your are to hear a pop, and the faster the adjustment the more comfortable it is, so it can be a good sign.

Some people are worried that it might be harmful to crack your joints, but studies so far have shown that cracking joints has nothing to do with causing arthritis.
